Understanding oneself as an introvert comes from popular personality categories such as introverts and extroverts. For example, individuals who prefer to stay at home, engage in less conversation, and be particular about their belongings are labelled as introverts. In contrast, extroverts are viewed as people who like to express themselves publicly, are often loud, and enjoy celebrating everything around them, generally feeling at ease in social situations. The interesting aspect is that the common perceptions of introverts and extroverts were given by Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who introduced the concepts of introversion and extroversion in his book “Personality Types”, published in 1921. According to Jung, introverts focus on their inner thoughts and feelings, while extroverts are more engaged with the external world and social interactions. These personality types were easy to understand and relatable, so they eventually became popular.
